Modernism versus Postmodernism

Note for Honors Students: there is no "slack" for Honors students and generally you need to do 25% more work. We should meet as a group to discuss... See me right after class Thursday to hash it out.

Note for students new to the Mix mix... freaking out? Don't. Right now it's all about the concepts. Don't worry about specific artist's names/works I'm showing... we'll come back to many of them. Once we get past the "concepts" (these first few lectures) we'll proceed by medium.

Note for students concerned about shocking/offensive work to be shown. You can preview a lot of the stuff we'll be looking at using the image link above.

See this! Different version of the Madonna American Life video http://www.rsafilms.com/spotPopup.php?id=1773

Website for Goldenshowers (the animation based on videogame classics that I showed... before you google this and get yourself in trouble).... That Video was titled Video ComputerSystem, btw.

http://www.goldenshower.gs (in English and Portuguese). If you can't access this on a University computer it means Big Brother is censoring you. If you can't get it, you won't be able to get Barry Kite's Aberrant Art either, boo, hoo... use your own computer! http://www.aberrantart.com/ ... we'll discuss him in the session on Appropriation.

Doing journals in this class is OPTIONAL. If you choose to get 50% of the points for your midterm and/or final exam, you turn journals in on the day I assign the exam OR EARLIER if you want feedback.

Journals earn 10 points per 2 pages. For the midterm exam you complete 5 journals:

1. TCA chapter 2, pp. 45-88. PLUS ITM: Eve Andrée Laramée pp. 64-75 or China Adams pp. 332-341.

2. TCA chapter 4, pp. 137-182 PLUS ITM: Michal Rovner pp. 44-51 OR Gillian Wearing, pp. 110-119 OR Thomas Joshua Cooper, pp. 182-191 OR Alix Lambert, pp. 342-353.

3. TCA, chapter 3, pp. 89-136 PLUS ITM, Thomas Kinkade, pp. 18-23 OR Matthew Ritchie, pp. 52-63 OR Chris Ofili, pp. 166-173

4. ITM: Expressing an Artistic Attitude, pp. 232-279.

5. ITM: Crafting an Artistic "Self," pp. 192-231.

Tips for podcast: some students find that keeping a running timesheet within their notes helps them find a certain portion of the lecture they'd like to replay without listening to the ENTIRE thing.

*****

About the JFK video I showed last time (by Antfarm)... You can watch that on Surveying the First Decade, volume 7, available on reserve at Hick's undergraduate bunker. On the home page of the library, click on the link for reserves, then use the drop down menu to select this course. Locate Surveying the First Decade on the list, click on the record, print it out, (or copy call number info) and present it to the reserve desk. You cannot get a reserve item without the call number! These videos are on 24 hour reserve. Please bring them back promptly so your classmates can also use them!

Limits on extra credit: There will be a LOT of extra credit available in this class, but it is necessary to set some parameters. Here are the basic:

You must take, and pass (with a C or better) the midterm and final exams.

You must take, and pass (with a C or better) the course project.

Extra credit can be used in place of the assignment points (which total 40 during the course) and can be used to raise the above grades, but will NOT compensate for a "not passing" score on any of these required elements.

Thoughts:

Consider the nature of the "space" between an appropriation and its original in terms of time period and medium.

Consider how much prior knowledge is assumed/required for the appropriation to "work" (can it work without any prior knowledge? can it stand on formal grounds alone?)

Ask the question "why?" or "so what?" or "what's the significance?" frequently.

For Appropriation think about content, context, style, medium of the item which is appropriated (and the artist who is appropriated in terms of history/theory) and the content, context, style, medium of the item doing the appropriating (and the artist doing the appropriating in terms of history/theory). How do the works inform each other? (Do they connect or clash? Is the appropriation meant to be ironic?) What is the "nature" of the appropriation. Is it visual or literary? is it a fragment or a whole? is it an appropriation of a specific work? a specific style (but not a specific work?) just the title? is it a modified reproduction of the original work? Does the appropriation seem to be part of a political statement? Does the appropriation seem to alter the meaning and/or significance of the original work? Does the appropriation question the original? Does the appropriation appear to pay homage to the original? Is the appropriation "tight" (very precise) or "loose" (references the original but is not exactly the same)?

notes about my notes:

Note that my notes are schematic! Most of what I say in the classroom is done without a net. So I suggest that you use these notes as a starting point and consider doing a little more research (all of these artists can be found on the internet) when it comes time to do your exam. Please ask me if you find something in my notes to be unclear.
