NATIVE AMERICAN/LATIN AMERICAN BODY ART / PERFORMANCE
James Luna, The Artifact Piece, 1986
Guillermo Gómez-Peña and Roberto Sifuentes, The Temple of Confessions, 1994.
The artists exhibit themselves, for 5 to 7 hours per day, in plexiglass booths. G—mez-Pe–a (shown here) sits on a toilet. Souvenirs hang from his chest and waist. He shares his booth with crickets, stuffed animals, tribal musical instruments and a ghetto blaster. A violet neon light frames the entire altar and a highly "techno" soundtrack plays constantly. In front of the booth is a church kneeler and a microphone, to allow viewers to confess their "intercultural fears and desires." At night he listens to the tapes. The most revealing confessions are edited and incorporated into the installation soundtrack.
