art of italian renaissance
TEXT: Frederick Hartt, History of Renaissance Art. Readings
from the text will be assigned; not all of the material will be
covered in class, but you are responsible for all the assigned readings.
OBJECTIVES:
This course aims to introduce the monuments and masterpieces of
Italian Renaissance art (c. 1300-1600) and the variety of methods
by which it is customarily understood (addressing issues of style,
technique, iconography and function.) It is also designed to explore
the relationship between art history and history, between art objects
and key episodes in political, social, and intellectual history.
While the contributions of artists such as Giotto, Donatello, Brunelleschi,
Michelangelo, and Titian will be discussed in detail, lesser known
artists and traditions will also be covered, particularly in writing
assignments.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
- "Quickie Questionies" = 10% of grade
- In-Class Essay: 10%
- Midterm: 20%
- Term Paper: 20%
- Final: 40% ***The Final Exam will be cumulative.***
TEST FORMAT, etc:
- There will be a variety of questions on the tests, including
matching, short answer, multiple choice, compare and contrast
etc. I will always make you aware of exactly how the test is constructed
beforehand. Make sure you bring a #2 pencil to class on test days
for computer scored exams.
- Make-up examinations will be given only in emergency situations
and with the proper written documentation of the problem
- "Quickie Questionies" are like pop quizzes, but you will always
be able to use your notes (but not your books) to answer them.
Students who attend class regularly, take notes in class and on
the reading assignments will have no problem tackling "Quickie
Questionies." You will never know when "Quickie Questionies" will
be asked, and they cannot be made up, so coming to class regularly
(and being there on time, and not cutting out early) is strongly
recommended.
