modern art Take-home
midterm exam
Due next Tuesday night, at the beginning of the hour. Late exams
will receive a score of zero. (If you think there's any chance that
you won't be here, turn it in early.) You may write or type the
exam, but try to make it legible.
WARNING: Put the ideas you find in textbooks or on handouts in
your own words. Do not copy and do not quote. If I find an instance
of plagiarism you will receive a zero. If you do not demonstrate
that you understand the ideas to the degree that you can put them
in your own words, your grade will suffer considerably.
Answer each of the following:
1.Choose one work that represents the clearest illustration of
each of the following styles. Arrange them in pairs and use them
as examples to compare and contrast style, subject matter and theory
in sets. You will be graded on your choice of appropriate works
and their placement into fruitful comparisons, as well as the actual
content of your essay.
- Fauvism
- Die Brücke
- Der Blaue Reiter
- Cubism
- Futurism
- Suprematism
- Neoplasticism
- Russian Constructivism
Hint: you might want to approach this from the standpoint of making
an "argument" for the inclusion of each of the works you've chosen
and the sets you've chosen.
2. Develop an essay that discusses similarities and differences
in the use of color in the work of the following artists:
- Gauguin
- Marc
- Delaunay
- Matisse
- Kandinsky
- Mondrian
Hint: make sure you consider the assigned reading in Dunning for
this one.
3. Discuss the "evolution" of Cubism in terms of its debt to Cezanne
and its modification through three separate phases. Your detailed
essay should name and describe specific works. Make sure that you
also clearly identify the name and characteristics of each of the
"phases."
4. Discuss the "intellectually based" movements that somehow engage
in a dialogue with Cubism. Which can be called "followers" of Cubism?
Which can be called "Critiques" of Cubism? How does the visual language
in these movements communicate the debt to and/or departure from
Cubism? Guideline: use no less than 5 examples, and make sure these
come from a variety of countries.
5. Explain how sculpture and architecture more completely blur
the boundaries between the intellectual and emotional paths we've
been following. Use one example of sculpture from each path and
one example of architecture from each path to create your argument.
