Essay Questions: (These will be the actual questions, you will
write about 2 of the 5)
1. Discuss the notion of "collaboration" during the Medieval period
characterized by Manuscript Illumination. How do characteristics
of the societal context support the notion of "collaboration"? How
does the style/design relate to the notion of "collaboration"?
2. Discuss the evolution of writing and/or visual communication
in two of the following periods/cultures. (Consider style, context
& purpose) Prehistory Egypt China Italy (Roman period)
3. Discuss the notion of a dual system of communication as it
is connected to societal divisions in both Egypt and Medieval Europe.
Who has the responsibility for communication and why? How do the
purpose and stylistic characteristics of written/visual communication
during these periods support and/or reflect those divisions?
4. Discuss the significance of the support (i.e. papyrus, paper,
etc.) and the form (i.e. book, broadside etc.) as it influences
the evolution of writing & communication during two of the following
periods. How does the cost of the materials create changes during
these periods? Egypt China Medieval Period Rome
5. Using two artists of your own choice, discuss the notion of
"public" vs. "private" in print and/or photography media. (Use one
artist for "public" and one for "private") Make sure to support
your ideas through consideration of style and context as it relates
to the medium and the purpose.
