asian art in-class assignment...
open book, open notebook

Answer each of the following as completely as possible.... use additional sheets of paper if necessary. Turn this in when you leave class.

Part 1. Identifications. For the following terms, give a brief general definition and then a careful description of visual and/or architectural elements associated with them.

Buddha

Bodhisattva

Stupa

Part II. Short Essay.

I've made the assertion that because of the way that Buddhism was developed in India, elements of the art and architecture frequently represent a synthesis of what could be called "religious indicators" (that is, parts of the theme or style of a work that can be determined to be linked to Buddhism or the practice of it) and "indigenous factors" (that is, parts of a theme or style of a work that were found prior to the development of Buddhism). Using a work from your textbook as an example, explain (1) how this synthesis can be demonstrated in that work and (2) at least one reason why the synthesis happened.
